Concept & Development
The prototype was created in 1 week as part of a solo game jam.
I implemented directional combat with the option of attacking/defending from the left/right using animations for attack moves & hit reaction.
The type of attack can be changed by combining another button-hold with the attack input, the different moves include various types of directional punch/kick attacks that require the correct defensive move to counter.
it adds a 'rock, paper, scissors' style of design, implemented directly into the moment-to-moment gameplay.
This creates a fluid & dynamic combo system that allows the player to chain different attacks in any order, provided they have the stamina to do so.
Further Development
I was happy with the concept but it felt very stiff and there was definitely something missing.
I decided to experiment with physical animations and Physics collisions along side the hitbox detection and pre-made animations.
It broke everything... The dojo has been cursed.
Instead of trying to botch it all together, I decided to rebuild the system from the ground up - this was always the plan as prototyping an idea is usually intentionally messy, especially from a technical perspective.
The addition of physical animation, as well as some juice elements, really brought it all together. I'm continuing to iterate on the gameplay and I'll be working with the artists from my team at BigHog to replace the stock assets with original models.
